Each character class has four special abilities, all varying in power, the range of damage, and the distance from where they can strike. The game takes a while to explain the intricacies of combat because there’s a surprising amount to unpack. The opening hours introduce the revamped combat system building upon the Paper Mario-inspired mechanics with more varied abilities, increased customisation and, most drastically, added movement on a grid-based battlefield, reminiscent of turn-based role-playing games like Fire Emblem. The turn-based combat felt borrowed and basic, but was largely forgiven due to the excellent execution in bringing South Park to life, and having a story filled with outrageous sequences which revisited some of the show’s best moments.įrom the outset, the Fractured But Whole’s mission is to fix the original’s most common complaint. While nowhere near perfect, The Stick Of Truth became one of the best video game tie-ins by playing to the strengths of its source material.
